I'd have no idea how to make this into a post myself, but I've been thinking about whether a podficcer can make any changes to a fic when they're recording it, with the author's permission, or maybe even an author writing a version of their fic that's better suited for podficcing. This came to me when I was listening to a fic, and I loved it -- and suddenly there was an NC-17 sex scene, and while I'm perfectly okay with that in writing, I always feel really awkward listening to it recorded, and I imagine there are many podficcers who dislike recording sex scenes. And I thought -- what if there was a way to just have an abridged, or toned down version, of sex scenes, for the sake of podficcing? Should we even be thinking about it? Will authors ever give podficcers leeway for changing their stories? Will authors be bothered to create alternate versions of their stories?
Sex scenes were what got me into thinking about this, but then I started thinking about how it might apply to smaller changes. Like, let's say there's a long dialogue scene; could a podficcer add dialogue tags to make it clearer for those listening? Can a podficcer not only read the story text, but adapt it to fit the medium?
I'm not that active in podfic meta so possibly these issues have been discussed before. But I think it could be interesting, and hopefully even productive.
