Podfic Meme

About a week ago I stumbled across an old vidding meme from a few years ago and I decided to adapt it for podficcers. I posted it to my journal and want to encourage other podficcers to do it as well (and it would be awesome if someone adapted it the meme even further so podfic listeners could fill it out too! [personal profile] idella was awesome enough to make a podfic listener version).

If you're interested in filling it out, here's the question/code:

For Podficcers

For Podfic Listeners

And here's a list of people (I know of) that have filled it out so far:

When did you first start podficcing?
I posted my first 2 podfics to [community profile] kradam_ai on September 14th, 2009.

What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it?
I had been listening to the podfic of Drop Dead Gorgeous on repeat for a couple months, and I had also just fallen hard for American Idol fandom and was consuming Kradam fics as if they were air. Eventually I started to really want Kradam podfic, and after trying and failing to get other people to make it for me, I finally decided to be brave and try my own. Fun fact: the first story I recorded was Kradam knifeplay, and I totally held a knife in my hand while I was recording it, to help me better visualize the action.

3. What fandoms have you podficced in?
American Idol S8 & S9, Bandom, Veronica Mars, Glee, and short ones for Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Hunger Games, Wicked, Into the Woods, and Paper Towns.

4. What was your favourite podfic to make or do?
Two come to mind: A Guided Tour of the October Country, because it was my first bandom podfic when I was feeling massively into bandom, and because it was [livejournal.com profile] novembersmith and it just felt so beautiful to read her words. And the editing went shockingly smoothly. And Outside the Rules, because it was really fun to have another person to act off of, and [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact's line readings were so funny I was giggling behind my hand whenever I wasn't reading, and because the editing process involved her doing all the hard work while I got progressively more drunk on whiskey and headbutted her shoulder and generally made a nuisance of myself. Also, choosing between multiple line readings is so much easier when there's someone else in the room to give a second opinion right away, which made editing go about 10 times faster than it normally does for either of us working alone.

5. Where do you draw your inspiration from for podfic?
Hm... I guess I'll say from all the great podfic that I listen to, that reminds me that there's so much more for me to learn and try. And of course from the stories that I read that make me want to immerse myself in them. And from knowing that there are people who listen to and connect with my readings. And I don't know if this counts as inspiration, but when I go a long time without working on a project, I get kind of an itch under my skin to perform and create, and podfic is the best outlet I have for that, so... podfic it is.

6. What was your least favourite podfic to make or do?
There were a couple that I made for an auction, and I learned from the experience that I really don't enjoy the experience of putting hours and hours of work and care into a story that I didn't choose. I did do a notpodfic for an auction last week, though, and that was fun, so I suppose I have finally found the solution to that problem!

7. Which podfic are you most proud of?
I am pretty proud of finishing Forever, Now, because it was so many hours long and I really didn't think I would make it, but I did. And I am also really proud of Rich Dirt, because I had so many thoughts about Veronica and Logan during the years I was in VM fandom, and I felt like they came through really clearly. And also the pod_together piece I just finished.

8. What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten?
Whenever people say that they enjoyed a story more, or saw new things in it, through my performance. Also something [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact said to me once, which I think had something to do with every word having meaning when I read it, or something like that? I can't remember exactly, but whatever it was, it was the nicest thing anybody has ever said about my readings. Also people who try new fandoms because I read them. Oh man, and also the way that [personal profile] aneas has made beautiful cover art for me. I have been blessed with some pretty phenomenal feedback over the past 2 years.

9. What's your opinion on music in podfic?
I am impressed that other people can pull it off, but have a hard time making it work in my own podfics. I don't add music unless there's a song that gets so wrapped up with the story in my head that it feels incomplete to leave it out. I think that's only been twice, but I am pleased with the results in both cases. I also loved it when [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo put music into one of my podfics for me!

10. Favourite genre to podfic to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU, etc.)?
Drama

11. Favourite fandom(s) and/or pairing(s) to podfic?
That's a tricky question right now. I probably feel most comfortable with bandom, but I am not feeling very fannishly connected to bandom. All the fic I'm reading right now is Klaine, but I am not particularly happy with my Kurt-voice so I don't love making podfic for that pairing. I really enjoyed the Veronica Mars one I did, but the other VM fic on my wishlist is huge and I don't really want to dive into it yet. I'm basically just taking things story by story right now.

13. What’s your podfic recording set up like?
I sit in a closet and record into my Zoom H2, with a spray bottle of water in case my mouth gets dry. I usually read off an iPad, and will read like 2–7 minutes for every completed minute of podfic. Ever since [livejournal.com profile] lunchy_munchy was here and told me about the way she records, though, I've wanted to try that. So when I get a chance, I'm going to pull out my Blue Snowball mic and my popscreen and try out a recording where I record straight into Garageband and edit/re-record as I go, rather than recording everything first and then editing later.

14. What is your latest project or idea for your next podfic (if your muse isn't dead)?
I've recorded Part 1 of Tell Me To Stop and need to edit it—I've got 10 minutes edited that I'm reasonably happy with and just need to get back to finishing it. There's also a lovely short story that [livejournal.com profile] ladyfoxxx wrote for me in the spirit of [community profile] pod_together that I'm excited to record. And I co-recorded a piece with [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact and another piece with [livejournal.com profile] lunchy_munchy that I would like to try to edit into something.

15. Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to podfic/is a newbie?
Maybe that if you feel ready to start on your own, just go for it and expect to learn as you go (and if you're nervous to ask for author permission for your first one, check the Blanket Podfic Permission List). If you feel like you want some support and handholding through your first one, find a friend who appreciates podfic, or contact a podfic reader whose work you like, and ask them if they'd be willing to beta/cheerlead/handhold you through your first one, so that you don't feel overwhelmed trying to figure everything out alone.

Also, don't worry that people won't like your voice/accent/style, because tastes vary enough that there there is pretty much guaranteed to be some listener you will be absolutely perfect for.

OK, I knew I knew your work from somewhere! You're the one who recorded Rich Dirt! It was fantastic! And, like you, I learned a lot (and had a ton of fun) with lunchy_munchy when she was here, and am looking foward to hearing what you co-recorded with her. We recorded something together too, and will post it sometime...

I am happy to be known for Rich Dirt! I love that story so much. Veronica 1.5 and sad-and-messed-up Logan YES PLEASE.

I am not totally sure that what I co-recorded with Lunchee is salvageable in terms of sound quality, sadly, since we had to do it in my living room—I didn't want to squeeze her into the closet with me!—and there is a lot of street noise. I will definitely edit it for myself and her, and then I guess we'll have to decide whether we want to try to post it. (I say try because I haven't actually approached the author for permission yet, since it was initially done spur-of-the-moment and just for fun.)
