One Song Glory: That one fabulous thing you wish there were more of

I really, really, really love [livejournal.com profile] kyizi's recording of Retrograde by Martha Wilson. She has a lovely, soft voice with a beautiful Scottish accent, but nevertheless, she does these uncannily spot on renderings of Jack O'Neill, John Sheppard, Teyla Emmagan, Rodney McKay, Cameron Mitchell, and a bunch of other Stargate characters. Her prosody is very gentle and calming, (this reading is one of my favorites to fall asleep to) but, at the same time, the compelling urgency of the story being told is never lost, the anxieties and conflicts and distrust and anger of all of the characters comes through crystal clear; the pacing is terrific!

There is exactly one thing that makes me sad about this reading.

It is the only podfic Kyizi has recorded to date (and for a very long, far too long time, it was the only long fic by Martha Wilson which had been recorded. [Thank you, podbang!])

So, is there any podfic which has some unique quality that makes you sad because the world would be a better place if there were more like that? Tell us about the author who needs more fic podficced. Tell us about the character who has great mannerisms which ought to be mimicked by a thousand fans but languishes with one bare recording. Tell us about other readers like kyizi, who made one fabulous reading and have gone back to less throat-shredding fannish pursuits. Explain to us the fantastic podfic experiment that, in a just world, would have become a common podfic practice.

Ponceflower's reading of eleveninches' Them Other Boys Don't Know How to Act, which is the most hilarious depiction of the team committed to audio that I've come across. The voices she gives to the characters are satirical and perfect for the story, and even after having listened to it uncountable times it still makes me break up into hysterics. It's genuinely a tragedy that there's not more read by her. :D

I will totally second this. Ponceflower did an amazing job reading each character and I will always be sad that it was her only solo podfic.

I really wish [livejournal.com profile] the_oscar_cat were still recording. She has a lovely Aussie (I think) accent, and her recording of the Nantucket AU was a treat. She's only recorded a couple other SGA fics and I so enjoyed her voice. I have the Nantucket AU and Something More, and both include hilarious outtakes. Getting to hear her get stuck on a word or phrase and then dissolving into gales of laughter made me smile. (And now that I've started recording fic myself, I completely understand the problem.)

One writer who I would love to see more in podfic is [personal profile] synecdochic. I would love to read her mainline Cammie-verse, but I don't think I have the right accent for it, since I sound the way she would if actually from Kansas rather than Black Mountain, and I'm not sure I could do justice to Broken Wings or Mezzanine, though I think they'd make awesome podfic in the right hands.

I'm pretty sure the_oscar_cat is english but yes, she is definitely someone who I miss hearing from. I *loved* her out takes, she was clearly having a freaking amazing time:)

Oops, I really suck at identifying accents. Thanks for the fix-it.

Those outtakes were the best chuckle-inducers. I'd include outtakes in my podfic, but they involve too much foul language, at least so far.

I agree with all of your adjectives to describe her writing. Her story "Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose" was my introduction to LJ and fanfic with....depth, maybe.

I'm going to podfic her little tiny SPN sketch, but I need more experience with creating podfic before I even consider taking on any of her other work. I have too much feeling attached to some of the stories to risk making a recording that doesn't do the story justice.

I love reading syne's fic (with my eyes) but I am unable to record it - the rhythm of her sentences is too hard for me to manage well. Yet! That's my explanation for me; I'm not speaking for everyone else, but I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was also an obstacle for other people? That and the general length of her work, I suppose. :))

Coming across this post made my day and I just wanted to say thank you! :)
