This was fun, as it's my main fandom and OTP, and a story I enjoy, although I'd read it long enough ago that the podfic was still engaging.
So, to the technical aspects of the recording. Good pacing and flow – reasonable energy in the reading, but not too fast. Nice emotional inflection where appropriate, not overdone.
The reader’s speech was easy to follow, very clear without being over-enunciated. Only a few hitches or stumbles, nothing significant. Nny has a clear BBC-English accent which I enjoyed, and I’m used to readers with various accents so it doesn’t bother me when readers don’t have the same accents as in the TV series. I liked Carson’s slight Scottish brogue which was very subtle. Most of us don’t attempt Carson’s accent (because we can’t!) so that was well done and I thought it worked fine. There was good demarcation between John and Rodney’s voices – a slight drawl and a deeper tone for John, and Rodney a little higher and more rapid-fire. The voice differences were subtle so I found that there wasn’t much difference between the main narration and the voices but it didn’t bother me and wasn’t confusing.
There’s only one briefish sex scene at the end, when John and Rodney finally get themselves sorted out and do more than just sleep with each other. It was reasonably done but two of the only background noises happened here – possibly they were caused by some mic feedback from the energetic sexy bits being read more loudly? – I couldn’t quite tell. It wasn’t a problem though. The sex scene wasn’t really a feature of the fic anyway, which is more about their emotional and psychological relationship.
The technical aspects of the recording were very good – really clear, almost no background sounds intruding, or breathing noises. This was a relief as I’d listened to a couple of other readings by Nny which were nice stories and readings, but were unfortunately affected by a lot of background hum/hiss. So I guess a new mic or new recording software for this one? Be interested to hear what was used that made the difference – well worth it, whatever it was. Good steady volume throughout, and it was loud enough, which some recordings aren’t, making them hard to listen to when out and about rather than in a quiet room. There were no errors that should have been edited out, and no special sound effects that I recall.
The intro and exit were very simple – just the story name and author at the start (I think it’d be good to give your handle as the reader too, as that info isn’t on the cover art and the podfic details don’t always register in iTunes with MP3 versions.) There was nothing marking the ending, not even a “the end”. As with the other feedback review I just posted, I realise many people don’t like music anywhere in podfic but I prefer it as an entry and exit mechanism. The lack of any way to segue out of the fic meant that (in the way my iPod’s set) the next podfic suddenly started playing straight away, which was mildly confusing. I know I could set the player not to be continuous but I like it that way for music playlists and it’s a hassle to keep altering it. As in my other review, I wonder whether a brief run of silence for maybe 10 seconds – plus recording a “the end” – would work as a non-intrusive segue. It’s not a big issue though, just a suggestion. I think it also depends on the fic – some writers manage a very clear and definite ending which is a good demarcation in itself, whereas in other fics the story sort of trails off more. This one had a fairly clear wrap at the end.
I love the story itself - John navel-gazing in a freaked-out and baffled sort of way as he moves from being oblivious to finally falling for Rodney (not that he realises it for a while), with the two of them misunderstanding and denying what’s going on in a clumsy emotional dance around each other. Until the happy ending, of course.
So overall, a pleasure to listen to, and some classic John and Rodney.

I always like hearing 'the end' at the end of podfics, partly because it clearly tells you it's all over and partly because the reader usually says it in a different tone of voice, a more natural one and I get a little thrill to hear it. I'm weird like that:)
