So, something came up in the discussion about changes that I'd like to talk about.

Is podfic for the writer, or is it an independent work of the reader?

We've got a couple of models about fanwork in fandom. There's fanfiction or fanart based on the source, which is clearly not for TPTB. And we've got art made for a particular fanfiction, which is generally presented as for the author of the fanfiction. And we've got exchange challenges, where the story written is a gift for the recipient. But we've also got prompt challenges and remix, where you're working based on story or prompt of a particular person, but it's really specifically not a gift.

Where does podfic fall in that spectrum? And, because of where it falls in the spectrum, should the authors whose work is being read treat it as a gift, or as an independent fanwork that they criticize to the extent/in the same manner as they would anything else?

We only have one more discussion question left from the 3w4w blitz, so if there's some podfic meta you'd like to bring up, please leave a discussion prompt

Roga would like to talk about re-editing and re-writing works for podficcing.

Would readers be interested in editing works for podficcing, whether for content (e.g. sex scenes), length, adding dialogue tags, etc.? Does "permission to record" cover a blanket "permission to adapt"?

How would authors feel about re-writing stories so they are easier to be read or to be understood orally? For instance, if your alien language just isn't pronounceable by human beings, or if you've written something in an experimental, visual structure.

And, Roga didn't ask this, but I would like to know, how would we, as listeners, react to getting a story that was changed from the text? How extensive would the changes have to be for you to want a heads up before you downloaded? Would you want the changes indicated in the metadata or also during the story reading?

I'd be interested in talking about podbook covers. I know I'd always expect the reader to be on there, but most podbook covers only have author and title. So now i'm feeling kinda egotistical to put my name on my podfics, but, in a way, the reader is the creator of that particular fanwork, right? So shouldn't her name be on there?

On Monday, I will try to post meta questions every other day. So far, in the prompt collection post, we have only three entries, so this may last only a week, but we shal see.

I hope that some of you have come up with podfic reviews. Remember, you should tell us something that worked, something that could have gone better, and a podficmeta issue that the recording raises for you.

Hope the discussion really gets rolling!

So, for [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw, people were interested in both frequent meta discussion and reviews.

So, please comment to this post if there's a discussion about podfic that you'd like us to have. If you have a full fledged entry, you can tell me that you'd like to do the posting. If you just have an idea you'd be okay with me riffing on, say that and I will.

Alternately, if you'd like to review a podfic, I'd like you to comment with the name of the podfic and the date you'll post. This isn't a very serious commitment; you can blow it off without recrimination. I'd just like people to try to space the reviews out a bit, and I know that I, personally, am more likely to complete a specific act with a deadline than a general, "Oh, I should participate in that project," notion.

Remember, reviews should tell us 1) What worked 2) What didn't and 3) a podfic-metaish thing that the podfic made you think of.

So, [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw starts April 26, and I was wondering if there was any interest in doing something for it.

I have two thoughts, but I am certainly open to someone else having an idea which is much cooler than mine.

First thought: Review Fest! You pick a podfic, and you tell us (1) What worked, (2) What didn't work, (3) Something podficmeta-ish this podfic makes you think of. (The answer to: does this count as podficmeta? is yes.)

Second thought: Meta Fest! People suggest a bunch of prompts for meta, and I post a discussion every other day for a few weeks.

Anyway, I am very open to different ideas for activities, and for not doing anything at all. I just thought I'd ask.
